Of course we have been working -just from home. But what happens when we go back to our physical offices, coworking spaces or otherwise?
Many employees who have held jobs that were granted the luxury to work from home during the coronavirus pandemic have begun to notice time in much different ways. Specifically, the time involved in commuting. It is not uncommon for city dwellers based in Berlin to commute an hour per day, for many in cities like New York or London this can be even longer! A recent study from Germany’s Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development found a rise of 0.2% in commuter numbers. This puts the total number of active commuters in Germany at 18.4 billion.
Commuting Compensation
So what happens to this time and how is it compensated? In the next couple months as people begin to return to life as we knew it before as a society we will see that perspectives have shifted. For instance, global thinking that certain jobs that we once called “low skilled” we can now refer to as essential. This includes grocery store employees, garbage truck drivers, and people who clean public spaces.
A break in commute has many office workers thinking about the time that they spent during commute is actually time that they are not compensated for and even more outrageously a burden that they themselves have to pay for. This is either by employees buying their own train tickets or the cost of maintenance on their personal vehicles.
In recent years, we have seen a rise in the need for employee benefit packages. It is more what people are looking for when applying to new jobs. Desirable talent want to know how their future employers are going to take care of them in ways outside just a salary. Employee benefits also speaks volumes to the type of company culture that a company is trying to foster.
